Research Asst
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our dynamic team in the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory. The successful candidate will support ongoing research projects aimed at understanding the mechanisms of infectious diseases, developing novel therapeutic strategies, and contributing to public health initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory procedures, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research Support
- Assist in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments related to infectious diseases.
- Assist in the preparation, handling, and processing of biological samples.
- Conduct laboratory tests and procedures, such as molecular biology techniques (PCR, sequencing), and microbiological assays.
- Collect, record, and analyze experimental data, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
- Maintain accurate records of sample processing and ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Assist with data entry and management related to sample tracking and analysis.
- Recognize, identify and resolve problems related to specimens, methods and instrumentation.
Laboratory Support
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure cleanliness and organization of the lab space.
- Order and manage laboratory supplies and ensure proper inventory levels.
- Assist in the preparation of reagents and materials for experiments.
Administrative Duties
- Assist in the preparation of reports, meeting minutes, presentations, and publications as needed.
- Assist in the development, implementation and revision of standard operating procedure(s) and risk assessments for department.
- Maintain proper documentation of relevant research documents, inventories, protocols, maintenance logs, sample processing logs etc.
- Assist in planning of study logistics, workflow, documentation and execution of new studies, liaising with internal and external parties as needed.
- Assist in the procurement of lab consumables, reagents, office supplies and equipment’s service contracts.
Collaboration
- Work closely with researchers and other team members to support ongoing projects.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions regarding project progress and improvements.
- Perform other duties as directed by supervisors and HOD, including work areas not mentioned here.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science or Advanced Diploma preferably with a relevant major e.g. biomedical science, infectious disease or immunology.
- Prior work experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.
- Bench work skills e.g. Real-time PCR, DNA extraction, PBMC processing, aseptic technique.
- Prior experience in laboratory inventory, stock taking, ordering reagents / consumables and maintenance of equipment, will be an advantage.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
