Research Asst
JOB SUMMARY
The Research Assistant supports research activities in community-acquired pneumonia, sepsis, and critical care medicine through the execution of experimental assays and clinical research protocols. The role is responsible for conducting laboratory techniques, managing research data, and supporting clinical research workflows. The Research Assistant will work under supervision to support research goals and contribute to the institution's research output through accurate data collection, analysis, and documentation.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SPECIFIC (80%)
- Laboratory Techniques and Experimental Work
- Perform molecular biology techniques including quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), RNA extraction, library preparation, and sequencing workflows for gene expression and transcriptomic analysis
- Conduct immunological assays including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for protein quantification, and biomarker analysis.
- Execute cellular analysis techniques including immunofluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry for cell population analysis.
- Operate high-throughput analytical platforms including multiplex assays (e.g., Luminex) for comprehensive biomarker profiling and cytokine analysis
- Support laboratory operations including reagent preparation, inventory management, procurement coordination, and equipment maintenance
- Maintain proper sample handling, storage, and processing protocols to ensure data integrity and experimental reproducibility
- Document experimental procedures, results, and observations in accordance with good laboratory practice standards
- Research Support Activities
- Conduct systematic literature reviews to support ongoing and future research projects, identifying relevant studies and emerging trends in pneumonia, sepsis, and critical care research
- Contribute to clinical research workflows, including preparation of ethics applications, patient recruitment coordination, and clinical database management
- Support manuscript preparation, data presentation, and research dissemination activities
- Assist with research project coordination, including timeline management and stakeholder communication
- Team Collaboration and Communication
- Actively participate in team meetings and project discussions to contribute to research planning and problem-solving
- Prepare research summaries, progress reports, and presentation materials for internal and external stakeholders
- Maintain accurate research records and documentation to support project continuity and regulatory compliance
- Support research publications and presentations as required, including data compilation and manuscript preparation assistance
- Collaborate effectively with clinical staff, research personnel, and external partners to ensure seamless project execution
GENERAL (20%)
- Handle administrative functions related to research operations, including meeting coordination, scheduling, and documentation of research activities
- Participate in departmental initiatives and training programmes as required
- Support laboratory maintenance, safety compliance, and adherence to protocols
- Assist with training and orientation of new team members, students, and visiting researchers, as needed
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Supervisor to support research objectives and departmental priorities
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
- Degree in Biological Sciences, Immunology, Microbiology, or a related field
TRAINING / SKILLS
- Familiarity with molecular and immunological laboratory techniques (qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence) is advantageous
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and good laboratory practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic data analysis
- Understanding of good clinical practice (GCP) and research ethics principles is preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and stakeholder interaction
- Demonstrated organisational skills and attention to detail with ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to work independently whilst maintaining collaborative team relationships
- Analytical mindset with problem-solving capabilities and adaptability to evolving research needs
EXPERIENCE
- Position suitable for fresh graduates
- Previous laboratory or research experience is advantageous but not essential
