Peer Support Specialist (National Addictions Managment Service)

The selected applicant will be providing peer support services as part of a multi-disciplinary team to patients with chemical addictions and non-chemical behavioural addictions for outpatient and inpatient units. Service provision will focus on working with patients to enhance their recovery through the use of one-to-one or group sessions. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(A) SPECIFIC (80%)

1.Provide peer support services to assigned caseload of patients. Work with patients on specific objectives identified on the treatment plan and provides honest feedback on progress made

2. Engages the patient in a warm, friendly manner that encourages an open discussion of needs and issues. 

3. Work in cooperation with other providers, family members or significant others involved in the patient’s recovery plan.

4 .Assist patients in joining support groups in NAMS and engaging with community services such as Alcohol Anonymous, Narcotic Anonymous, We Care and Halfway Houses.

5. Offer encouragement in times of crisis to patients.

6. Provide phone call support to patients.

7. Serve as a role model to a patient by demonstrating positive attitude, self-care and good decision making skills.

8. Exemplifies recovery principles in order to show by example that recovery is possible and attainable. Share one’s own recovery story as appropriate to patients to encourage recovery.

9. Facilitate NAMS Inpatient Programme modules (e.g., activities, support groups and family session) where appropriate.

10. Facilitate ward activities conducted over the weekend where appropriate.

11.Participate in follow up plans with patients who have completed inpatient treatment.

12.Facilitate addiction education modules to patients and their families.

13.Facilitate recovery support groups in NAMS.

14.Participate in interdisciplinary staff meetings, case conferences (where required) and attend individual and group supervision.

15.Coordinate and consult with other team members to keep team informed of issues and progress of patients. Provide feedback to treatment team on patient's readiness to change and motivation.

16.Participates in talks when necessary and serves as an advocate with the aim of reducing stigma and promoting recovery from addictions.

17.To maintain professional standards at all times. To observe the guidelines established within the Code of Ethics and Conduct.

 

(B) GENERAL (20%)

1.Ensure timely completion of all required documentation of services provided.

2.To perform general administrative duties, including correspondence and liaison with internal departments and external agencies. 

3. To assist the department in the development of programmes, recovery topics and materials for patients.

4.Assist in maintaining facility safety and security.

5.Perform other duties/projects as assigned.


 JOB REQUIREMENTS

(A) EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum GCE O level, Diploma in social sciences and related discipline is preferred or certification in addiction and with relevant work experience in addiction management work.
  2. Minimum 2 years in recovery from any addiction.
  3. Basic knowledge of PC applications (Microsoft Words & Excel)
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills
