Laboratory Technical Assistant / Associate, Central Processing (Dept of Laboratory Medicine)
Job Scope:
Receives and sorts specimens, performs order entry and labelling of specimens, prepares specimens for analysis, and routes the specimens to the respective laboratory for analysis in the Central Processing (CP) Section of the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM).
Ensures that specimens that are unsuitable for testing are rejected and promptly notified to the requesting location, and records details of the communication in the laboratory reports.
Measures / notes the volume of 24-hour urine.
Discard the 24-hour urine specimens after tests completed and dispose the containers.
Prepares new 24-hour urine containers with appropriate preservatives added.
Centrifugation and aliquoting of send-away specimens (as required)
Moves supplies/materials to storage areas, and packs and removes them from the storage areas, as required.
Collects blood stock from the Blood Services Group (BSG) and despatches specimens to referral laboratories.
Prepares and despatches laboratory reports as required.
Assists in cleaning up biological or chemical spills.
Assists to maintain instruments to ensure proper functioning of the instruments.
Assists to pack and move forms/records to the storage room.
Job Requirements:
Works on 3-rotating-shift work patterns, including staggered and extended working hours, and coverage after hours and on weekends and public holidays to meet the needs of the department and hospital.
Expects moderate lifting, bending, walking, repetitive motion, and standing to complete the assigned tasks.
Qualifications & Experience:
Preferably Higher NITEC / “A” Level and above
Preferably with at least 2 years of relevant working experience in a clinical laboratory and the right aptitude and skills to perform the duties and responsibilities in this job grade.
